Broncs Defeat Hawks By Twenty-Eight

By Lisa Hughes

The Mullen Broncs capitalized on a couple of early turnovers by the Hawks to build an early lead Friday night, one they would never relinquish.  The first almost ten minutes of the first quarter was a defensive battle as neither team was able to get on the scoreboard until 2:27 left in the first.  The Broncs’ Gideon Monette scored on a 6 yard run and the extra point attempt was good by Bailey McMillan to give Mullen the 8-0 lead.  With 38 seconds left on the clock the Broncs turned an interception into a 16 yard touchdown pass from Riley Rice to Tye Spies.  The PAT was no good and the Broncs led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.  The Broncs put another 14 points on the board in the second quarter on a 46 yard drive that ended successfully with a 13 yard pass from Riley Rice to Gideon Monette.  Rice capped the drive with a successful PAT run.  Just 42 seconds later, Riley Rice picked off a Hawks pass and took it 50 yards for the touchdown to give the Broncs the 28-0 lead at half.  The Hawks were able to get some offense going early in the second half when the Hawks put together a 46 yard drive that was capped off by a 32 yard run from Jordan Houser with 10:16 left on the clock.  The points after failed but the Hawks were now on the scoreboard trailing 28-6.  Mullen scored again with 2:54 left in the third when Rice found the endzone again on a 1 yard quarterback keeper.  As is common in eight man football, there is always a lot of offense.  The Hawks scored just 47 seconds later when Regg Strotheide hit Austin Weyers on a 54 yard pass.  Mullen returned the favor with 49 seconds left in the third quarter when Riley Rice scored on a 16 yard run.  Neither team was able to score in the final twelve minutes and the Broncs held on for the 40-12 victory. Leading rushers for the Hawks were Jordan Houser and Chris Ray. Leading the defense in tackles were Stevin Horrocks, Jordan Houser, Joey Johnson, and Nate Letcher. The Hawks fall to 1-3 on the season while the Broncs move to 3-2.  The Hawks will host the Banner County Wildcats for Homecoming this week.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
